The Bouga Luv 5km Kidz Series is a series of eight 2.5km and 5km fun runs for kids in South Africa, and targets schools in mainly the disadvantaged communities of the country. The inaugural event took place in Soweto, South Africa in September 2008, and attracted 1500 kids from the area. The Bouga Luv 5km Kidz Series is not just another fun run for kids. The concept was developed out of the need for instilling in the minds of our children the need for a healthy lifestyle. It is under this banner that the Series has adopted the slogan: “A new agenda for a healthy nation”. The events therefore incorporate the planting a vegetable gardens at the school where the event takes place, and a programme to educate the educators and learners on the maintaining of gardens, which double up as income generators for the school. This includes educating the school about the need for healthy lifestyle choices for its tuck shop programmes. Also incorporated in the programme is the Papadi ya Bana kids programme which The Bouga Luv Development Foundation has partnered with Food Gardens Foundation in these instances, who take the responsibility for this element of its programme. It is our vision that the Bouga Luv Kidz Series sets the standard for races in this category. It is imperative that the Series be recognised for its value, creativity, and quality to children and runners alike. The routes will be designed by credible sources, and it is our intention to utilise the services of world renowned, and IAAF accredited route measurer, Norrie Williamson.
